As part of Savannah's birthday celebration, we took a quick road trip to Portland, Maine. It had been a while since either of us traveled across the border, and this trip had an exciting bonus: tickets to see Stephen Sanchez live in concert (more on that later).
October is always a stunning time to travel, thanks to the incredible fall colors that brighten up the East Coast. The entire 8+ hour drive from Nova Scotia to Maine was a treat for the eyes. Naturally, I packed our cameras and gear to capture some of that beauty during our short time in Portland.
Before we left, I’d done some research on photography spots around the city, but funnily enough, a lot of them mirrored scenes we have back home in Nova Scotia (like lighthouses and coastal views). So, on our first day, we decided to play it by ear and see if anything unique would catch our eye.
That’s how we stumbled upon Deering Oaks Park in Portland. This popular park surprised us with its vibrant beauty, especially with the fall colors in full force—it was like walking into a painting!
On Day 2, we headed into Portland’s downtown to explore the city and try our hand at some street photography. We know that street photography isn’t for everyone—the idea of photographing strangers can feel a bit intrusive. But for us, it’s an art form, and we always approach it with respect and care. We see it as a way to capture life as it unfolds around us; sometimes, those candid, unplanned moments make for the most meaningful images. Savannah and I had a blast wandering the streets together, seeking out interesting subjects and the little stories happening all around us.
To top it all off, we ended the trip with a concert that left us absolutely speechless. We went in expecting a great performance from Stephen Sanchez, but we weren’t prepared for just how incredible he sounded live. It’s rare for an artist to sound even better in person than on their albums, but he completely blew us away. It was worth every penny (including the $55 USD I spent on parking that night 🫠).
